FBI Tracking Device Teardown

Teardown of a FBI tracking device found.  Whats interesting to me is the “lithium-thionyl chloride” Batteries inside this device.  It may be a low voltage 3.7volts but they last for oh… ten to twenty years!!!  Check out the breakdown over at ifixit.

 The device is similar to the one Yasir Afifi found underneath his car. If you’re curious where this one came from, Wired has posted a writeup about Karen Thomas, the woman who found this tracker under her car. They’ve also posted a video of Kyle doing the teardown.The device comprises of a GPS unit for receiving the car’s position, an RF transmitter for relaying your location to the interested authority aka the FBI, and a set of sweet D-cell batteries that power the whole enchilada. Twentieth Century Fox is cranking up the star power at its Century City studios, where Solar Power, Inc. has completed the installation of a large solar array. The 160 kW photovoltaic PV solar system was mounted on Fox Studio’s historic Building 99 using Solar Power’s SkyMount commercial rooftop system, as well as conventional racking. The new PV system is the movie giant’s first on-site renewable energy system.

I Love my TED Talks iPad app, Top 5 favorites.  You can jump on browse through the hundreds of TED presenters recorded and posted free on the web.  Over the weekend I read about Kate Orff.  Kate is trying to revive New York’s polluted rivers with the use of Oyster’s.  Quite an interesting talk and very informative about oysters and the role they play in cleaning polluted waters.  The Video is short and I invite anyone with an extra 12min to check it out.
