I recently got back to good old Tulsa, Oklahoma from a trip to Iceland, Ireland, and the UK. I was contemplating doing a daily update from over there, but the price to get on the interet was too much. This trip was a great experience, I was lots of great things, but I have to say one of my favorite parts of the trip was a show I caught on the BBC. It is called “Summer Heights High,” and I think it is an Australian show. It is a mockumentary in which the star, Chris Lilley plays three parts at a high school: a private school girl sent to the public school on an exchange program, a music teacher called Mr G, and an boy who is always getting in trouble. The show is HILARIOUS. I hope maybe HBO or Showtime will pick it up. Here are some clips of each of the characters:

Ja’Mie King

Mr. G

Jonah

Another great part of the show is how good the other kids are. They are better actors than the kids on The Hills.

Speaking of the Supreme Court ruling, I happend to watch SNL this past weekend because they were showing the very first episode which was hosted by the late, great George Carlin. There was a hilarious video called “Show Us Your Guns,” where a bus full of SNL greats were driving around with a sign that said, appropriately, “Show Us Your Guns.” I thought it was appropriate considering the Supreme Court ruling last week. While I couldn’t find that video, I came across this gem. Enjoy.

No, he and the fam didn’t pose for the Holiday J. Crew catalog. Click the break to find out more.

Back in 2007, Barack said that he would would accept public financing for the general election if he were the Democratic Nominee: “In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election,” Obama wrote. ”My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election. My proposal followed announcements by some presidential candidates that they would forgo public financing so they could raise unlimited funds in the general election. The Federal Election Commission ruled the proposal legal, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge.” However, today, he announced on his website that he will not accept the public funds and rely solely on private donations. I think it is a smart move on his part, considering he raised almost $300 million during the primary season. He is “banking” on the fact that he can raise as much if not more for the general. The public financing would restrict his spending to about $85 million. However, from the above quote, is it possible that this is the first “flip-flop” from the Democratic candidate? Let’s hope not.

The Man, the Myth, the Legend, Tiger Woods, is having knee surgery that will keep him out for the rest of the golf “season.” Not only does this mean we won’t get to see him playing on the links of the British Open, but he won’t get to compete against the rest of the world in the Ryder Cup. The US can’t beat those guys with Tiger, so we are really going to get destroyed without him. Bummer.

In November 2008, an African-American could be elected the next President of the United States. Just yesterday, I was talking to a WWII African-American veteran that served in an all-black unit. That was just 65 short years ago. Real civil rights laws weren’t passed until a mere 45 years ago. This country has come a very long way in this short time period. That is why I am so excited that this ended up happening. I was really worried for the past few months that the Clinton machine would end up stealing this nomination from Senator Obama, somehow, someway. If you can’t tell, I am kind of like Obama-Girl and have a little bit of a crush on Barack. This does not mean, however, that I am ready to endorse him as y2kers.com unofficial political pundit. I really like John McCain. I have since 2000 when he was trying for the Republican nomination. I am going to reserve judgement until I see what happens in the upcoming months before the general election. Regardless of what happens, this is an important moment in the history of this great country.

Jack Mildren was the first big-time recruit from the state of Texas to cross the Red River and join the Sooner Nation, leading the way for many to follow him. Mildren was such a big recruit that he inspired a young H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger who later in life would write the book “Friday Night Lights” which later inspired a movie and TV show. He was, and will always be, The Godfather of the Wishbone, the offense that played such an important part to the success of Oklahoma Football in the 70s and 80s. Barry Switzer, offensive coordinator who was responsible for Mildren’s recruitment, instilled the wishbone in the middle of the 1970 season for Mildren to run. While the Sooners struggled with the complicated offense at first, the next year saw them average an NCAA record 472 yards per game (7.9 yards per play, 7.1 yards per rush), paving the way for the back-to-back National Championshihps in 1974 and 1975. He was also an Academic All-American. After his career at OU was over, he played in the NFL and would later become Lt. Governor of the great state I call home, Oklahoma. He was probably best known to us y2kers for his work on The Sports Animal. Here is some highlights from the 1971 OU-Texas game, the best highlights I could find of Jack Mildren (#11). Hope you enjoy watching him thrash up the Longhorns for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 48-27 Sooner victory.

No, I’m not talking about Barack Obama wrapping up the Democratic Nomination, I’m talking about David Cook winning American Idol. If any of you y2kers care what I think about the American Idol finish, check back after the break.

So, I know some of you all probably think I am bias, because this guy spent a few years of his life mastering his craft in my favorite city: Tulsa, Oklahoma, but this guy really is awesome (anyone that saw the Guitar Hero commercial from last night has to agree with me, youtube it if you haven’t seen it.) I was 100% convinced that the other David from Utah had this thing wrapped up. Maybe it was the fact that he was a teenager and little teen girls in reality probably run this country right now (by that I mean they probably have the most buying power). It also could have been the fact that at the age of 17, that could could flat out sing. He is one of the best singers I have heard in a while. The kid has natural talent to sing and will have a good career singing songs that other people write. BUT, David Cook is a natural. He is so relaxed on stage, he took risks during the whole competition, and refused to back down, even when people said he should sing one of his “money” songs for the final episode. That, by the way, is exactly what the other David did when he sang the best song ever written for the finale. For the second time this season, he sang “Imagine” by John Lennon. For those of you that know me, you know how I feel about John. For those that don’t, I’ll just say that I think he is the best song-writer that has ever lived. Period. Now the fact that Archuleta decided to sing only the last verse of “Imagine” makes me mad. But, that is a problem I have with the whole show in general. I don’t know how you all feel about music, but I consider it a work of art, much like I consider film. You wouldn’t want to watch 1/2 or even 1/4 of a movie, so why would you want to hear that much of a song. So, when they do that to Beatles’ music (especially John Lennon music) I get a little bitter. But, those are the rules of the show, and they have to follow them. That being said, I thought Archuleta was a good singer (as I said earlier) but he messed up too many times (forgetting words, to Beatles’ songs none the less) but also was a bit too cheesy. I know that seems like an obvious statement for American Idol, but he took it to the extreme. That being said, I would like to congratulated David Cook. HIs version of songs (although, admittedly, a lot of them had already been done by “established” musicians) were nonetheless different for a show of this kind. I hope he has a good career and does not forget the years he spent in T-Town. Thanks for hanging in there for all that, hopefully I will have some spare time in the near future to talk about things that reallly matter, such as the future of our country or Sooner Football.
